Where it started
Nearly ten thousand posts, and an author who must not notice.
Skip Moen has published a study almost every day for years. The site holds close to ten thousand posts, tens of thousands of comments, a membership area, donations, and a podcast feed. More than half its pages still ran on an old page builder inside a default theme.
The one rule that mattered above all others: Skip writes every morning in the classic editor, and that experience could not change in any way.
What went into it
The work, item by item.
A baseline of every rendered page and a full copy of the site on a separate staging server, with outgoing mail redirected so no subscriber saw a thing during the build.
A converter that rebuilt 112 page-builder pages as native blocks, including seventy-six book and audio pages, and can be run again safely.
A study-post template with a Hebrew word block and yesterday-and-tomorrow navigation, while the author’s posts stay in the editor he knows.
Editor validation passed on all 114 pages, and unneeded scripts removed from pages that did not use them.
A launch that promoted specific pages into the live site by ID, because the live site gains posts, comments, and donations every day and could never be overwritten wholesale. A dry run first, with zero warnings.
A display-only clean-up of pasted Word formatting that keeps the author’s deliberate text colours.
Donation receipts that had been failing authentication moved to a proper mail service the same day.
A separate automation that emails each morning’s study to the subscriber list on time, replacing a feed that ran hours late.
The result
Faster, modern, and unchanged where it counts.
Mobile page speed on the homepage went from 76 to 92, with requests cut by more than half.
Every one of 116 page titles matched the original site at launch, and a thirty-four-point post-launch check came back clean with no script errors.
Mail authentication passing on all three checks the evening of launch.
Skip wrote the next morning’s study exactly as he always has.
Runs on: Native Kadence with a child theme on the existing host, the original SEO, membership, donation, and podcast plugins kept at parity, mail over Zoho.
